The Oklahoma football team will need a lot of help if the Sooners want to make the College Football Playoff after losing to Baylor.

Though the Oklahoma football program could still conceivably make the College Football Playoff, the odds are not in the Sooners’ favor to make the four-team field this season.

Even before Oklahoma lost its first game of the season to Baylor, the Selection Committee was not high on the Sooners. They had them ranked No. 8 prior to the road date with Baylor. After losing to the Bears in Waco, Oklahoma stumbled all the way to No. 13. While no team ranked this low at this stage of the season has ever made the playoff, Oklahoma still has a shot at getting in.

Here is what it will take for the Sooners to be one of the four teams making the playoff this year.

Oklahoma football needs chaos to happen to make College Football Playoff

Not only does Oklahoma have to win out, but the Sooners will need help/chaos all across the Power Five. The Sooners have Iowa State at home this week. After that, they have to play Oklahoma State in Stillwater for Bedlam. Assuming the Sooners win those two tough games, they will have to face either Baylor or Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship game and win big.

So even if the Sooners go 12-1 (8-1) and win the Big 12 for a ridiculous seventh time in a row, that may not be enough for them to get in. They are going to need help from at least four other Power Five schools to have a snowball’s chance of getting in. Simply, Oklahoma needs Alabama, Oregon and Notre Dame to all lose a second game before Selection Sunday. They also need Big Ten chaos.

With Alabama, Oregon and Notre Dame out of the picture, Oklahoma needs Ohio State to beat Michigan State and Michigan in succession. The Buckeyes could land the Spartans and the Wolverines their second losses of the season to eliminate them. It also would not hurt the Sooners’ chances if Ohio State took a shocking loss to someone like Wisconsin in Indianapolis.

Right now, Oklahoma fans should be rooting for teams like Georgia and Utah to keep on winning.
