Week 12 dashed the hopes of at least two playoff hopefuls and opened the door for a two-loss playoff team. Here is a look at the fallout.

Who had a worse Saturday, Oregon or Michigan State? On the one hand, Ohio State just threw for another touchdown on that Spartans secondary. On the other hand, Oregon controlled its own destiny, despite being dogs against the three-loss Utes. Both teams were ostensibly contenders but serve as a stark reminder that it is Georgia, Ohio State, and everyone else. (That’s not to say Alabama won’t beat Georgia in the SEC title game.)

Despite the loss, though, Oregon will get another crack at Utah in the Pac 12 title game. Clemson played its most complete game of the season to keep its ACC title hopes alive. Granted, they only scored 48 on a team that gave up 56 to Army, but welcome back Tigers. Alabama (holy Bryce Young!) sowed up their spot in the SEC Championship. Cincinnati buried SMU along with all doubt that they belong and Notre Dame stayed relevant keeping the possibility of them somehow jumping the Bearcats discouragingly real.

Our heroes at UTSA knocked off UAB, clinching their division in Conference-USA. Birds Up!

The cream has risen to the top, and you can bet that, absent conference championship turmoil, some combination of these Top 5 will be in the Playoff.

Ohio State is where it belongs sitting at number two, despite losing to Oregon earlier, because ball don’t lie. Clemson fell four points shy of number 25 in the poll, but that’s what happens when you mess around for 10 games before figuring out how to run a competent offense.
