4. Bill Walton — 1985-87 seasons

Bill Walton had a strange career that could have ended as one of the best to ever play the game, but it was really just highlighted by injuries. His time with the Portland Trailblazers and Clippers saw him go between one of the league’s best to never being on the court. Foot injuries were really the story of his career, and he missed three full seasons with injuries. He was forced to miss more than 50% of the games he was supposed to play.

At the end of his career, Walton got a “radical” surgery to lower the arch on his foot and try and salvage what was left of his basketball career. He played much better after the surgery, but the long list of injuries would eventually catch up to him after he was traded to the Boston Celtics.

Walton was pretty good as a bench player during the 1985-86 season. He was far removed from his MVP years, but he still averaged around 7 points and 7 rebounds per game. He was honestly just along for the ride with a great Celtics team. Boston ended up winning the championship that season, the last championship they would win until 2008. He even won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award.

Walton tried to come back for one more year, but the injuries just finished him off. He tried to come back two more times, but he never played another game after the 1987 playoffs. Walton’s career is one of the biggest “what ifs” in the history of the game. He was able to have that one last good season in Boston, but it still was a shell of what he used to be.
