3 2022 free agents who deserve bigger contracts than Wander Franco
Corey Seager — 10 years, $300 million
Corey Seager has continually made his case as one of the best offensive weapons at shortstop in baseball.
The Dodgers’ star, who won the 2020 World Series MVP award, is coming into free agency under less ideal circumstances than he might have hoped. A broken hand limited him in 2021 and may add to concerns about his ability to stay healthy throughout his career.
Despite that, the market for Seager should ensure he cashes a pretty nice check this offseason. If Franco managed to get $185 million guaranteed on potential, Seager’s actual performances should put him in range for a contract worth upwards of $300 million.
The Dodgers may want to bring Seager back but the competition for his signature should be fierce. That’ll just add dollars to his eventual contract.
There are plenty of teams out there who are eager to add Seager’s bat to their lineup. In 2021, he hit .306/.394/.521 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI in 95 games. He’s a two-time All-Star and would have more of those titles if his injury luck wasn’t so terrible.
As for the postseason, he’s been an NLCS and World Series MVP. He can get it done in October.
