How old is Max Scherzer? Why Mets could come to regret contract
By Mark Powell
Max Scherzer is already entering the latter days of his career, meaning the Mets could come to regret the loaded contract they just gave him.
Scherzer is 37 years old, meaning at the end of his three-year deal he’ll be entering a new decade of his life. While he’s been plenty effective in his late 30’s, Steve Cohen is taking a huge gamble by giving in to Scherzer’s demands of a three-year contract.
His deal is for three years and $130 million. It’s those numbers that convinced Scherzer, a players’ union leader, to take the highest offer on the table and play in New York. The deal also contains an opt-out after the second year should Scherzer hate playing in New York so much he’d rather punt on over $30 million than stay in Queens. That seems unlikely.
Who owns the Mets?
Cohen, MLB’s richest owner, is on the hook for Scherzer’s contract. All $130 million of it.
That’s small change for Cohen, especially given the money he’s likely to rake in from the Mets ticket and merchandise sales alone. This man knows a good investment when he sees one, which is the same reason he made Francisco Lindor the richest shortstop in baseball (at the time). Cohen is not afraid to spend, and Mets fans should be thrilled by that basic fact.
How old is Max Scherzer?
Scherzer is 37, as previously mentioned. The Mets giving him a three-year deal is a risk, but a calculated one by Cohen.
Given his success last season, in which he pitched to a 15-4 record and a 2.46 ERA, the Mets don’t have much to worry about in the immediate future.
