USC pulled off the shock of the century by pulling Riley out of Norman. While he was denying a link to LSU, the Trojans managed to convince him to give up an established program at Oklahoma to start a rebuild at USC.
In five years as the Sooners’ head coach he won four Big 12 titles and took his team to the College Football Playoff three times.
During that same timespan, USC floundered under Clay Helton with conference title and playoff hopes waning.
Riley’s arrival is a new dawn for the Trojans. He will set about to bring his high-octane offense to Los Angeles while reviving recruiting at just the right moment.
The challenge for Riley will be to give USC their swagger back. He’s uniquely qualified to make that happen.
