Philadelphia Eagles: Nnamdi Asomugha

On paper, the Eagles had one of the best offseasons in NFL history in 2011. They had signed the likes of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Jason Babin, and Cullen Jenkins. The cherry on top of their sundae, though, was All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

Asomugha was coming off his second All-Pro selection in 2010 with the Raiders. The Eagles saw enough in the star cornerback to give him a five-year deal worth $60 million. After signing with Philadelphia, though, Asomugha was not the same. The Eagles struggled that season, finishing with a 5-11 record, and Asomugha was more of a liability than a weapon in coverage. It didn’t get better in 2012, and after just two seasons, the Eagles cut the two-time All-Pro, putting an end to what was thought to be a home run of a signing.

Asomugha spent 2013 in San Francisco with the 49ers, his final year in the NFL. What was thought to be a “Dream team” of sorts in Philadelphia following the arrival of Asomugha, among others, crashed and burned. The disastrous two years cost Andy Reid his job. How the Eagles failed to win with that roster is one of the biggest question marks in NFL history.
