Buffalo Bills: Vontae Davis

Do you remember in 2018 when a Bills player retired during halftime of a game? Yeah, that was Vontae Davis. From an outsider’s perspective, this is, frankly, quite funny. Can you imagine being so fed up with a team that you retire during a game?

To make the picture a little more clear, the Bills weren’t a great team in 2018. They had just drafted Josh Allen, who was far from the prolific quarterback he is today, and were in the midst of yet another rebuild. Buffalo signed the veteran cornerback to a one year deal worth $5 million to bring some veteran leadership into the locker room.

Buffalo got blown out 47-3 in Week 1, and were down 28-6 at halftime to the Chargers in Week 2 when Davis decided he was no longer going to play. Davis actually didn’t play in Week 1, so his career in Buffalo lasted all of two quarters.

There were several other bad signings that deserve to be noted, here- Langston Walker and Percy Harvin come to mind. Plus, Davis was an aging veteran who was only signed to a one-year deal, but to have a player retire at halftime is a feat that can’t go ignored. The Bills were bad, sure, but they trusted Davis to be a veteran leader for a team that was getting younger and rebuilding. Instead, he completely bailed on them, leaving players and coaches alike extremely upset and furious over his lack of dedication.
