Cincinnati Bengals: Laveranues Coles
Laveranues Coles had a respectable career. He was a reliable target for the Jets and Washington Football Team throughout the 2000s, and was named a Pro Bowler in 2003 with Washington. Coles had a second stint with the Jets that spanned from 2005-08. He caught 70 passes for 850 yards and seven touchdowns in his final season with the Jets before signing with the Bengals prior to the 2009 season.
Cincinnati gave the 32-year-old receiver a four year deal worth $27.5 million. That season, Coles caught just 43 passes for 514 yards. The Bengals made it to the playoffs that year, but were defeated in the Wildcard round by Coles’ former team, the New York Jets. New York had a fantastic defense that season and were on their way to reaching their first of two consecutive AFC Championship Games. Coles had a fumble in the game that would help the Jets win and advance.
After signing a four-year contract, the Bengals released him after just one year with the team. Coles would retire soon after, and the Bengals were left with egg on their face after a questionable signing for an aging receiver that didn’t pan out.
