Ranking the top 30 UNC basketball players in program history
14. Al Wood (1977-81)
Al Wood was one of the greatest shooters in UNC program history—perhaps the greatest at the time his career ended in 1981.
Wood is often overlooked in Tar Heels’ lore as he began his career playing with Phil Ford and ended it alongside James Worthy and Sam Perkins. That said, his contribution to the success of each of those teams was undeniable.
As a sophomore in 1978-79, Wood averaged 17.8 PPG on a team that won the ACC and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a junior, Wood averaged 19.0 PPG on a team that once again made the second round of the NCAA Tournament. His final season, 1980-81, saw the Heels break through to the Final Four with Wood as the leading scorer (18.1 PPG).
Over his four seasons in Chapel Hill, Wood racked up 2,015 points—the third 2,000+ point scorer in program history and a mark that still places him in the top 5 all-time.
