Yankees offseason rumors, Austin Romine

The Yankees need to retool their roster to make a World Series run in 2022 and bringing these three stars back to the Bronx could really help Aaron Boone.

Brian Cashman and his front office have their focus clearly directed towards the future of the Yankees franchise. That doesn’t mean revisiting the past couldn’t help Aaron Boone and his coaching staff. Bringing a veteran or two back to the Bronx might do wonders for New York’s locker room and on-field product.

The team shouldn’t waste a valuable roster spot on a player incapable of helping them capture an elusive 28th World Series title, but there are former Yankees that could return and fill holes on the roster. Fans of the AL East powerhouse should keep a close eye on these three former players during the coming months.

3. Austin Romine

Romine doesn’t profile as anything more than an average catcher at this stage of his career, but he’d be valuable insurance behind the enigma known as Gary Sanchez. Kyle Higashioka hits an occasional home run, but he’s nowhere near the right answer for Boone behind the plate.

The 33-year-old backstop originally left the Yankees to become a starter in Detroit before being traded to the Cubs last season. He’s a minus at the plate but he still can provide adequate defense at a position of need for the Yankees.

The fact that Romine is an unrestricted free agent makes him a potentially easy acquisition for the Yankees. Signing him isn’t going to win any press conferences in the Big Apple but he’d give Boone a valuable depth piece for his bench. Re-signing Romine makes sense at the right price this offseason.
