Cubs: What’s stopping a Kris Bryant reunion?
With star third baseman Kris Bryant still out in free agency, is there a chance he could return to the Chicago Cubs?
What does the future have in store for veteran third baseman Kris Bryant? Hearts were broken all over the Windy City when it was announced ahead of the trade deadline that the Chicago Cubs were sending him to the San Francisco Giants.
The images of Bryant wiping away tears after he heard the news remains fresh for Cubs fans. So, could a reunion be in the works here? It’s hard to say, but it’s something that folks all over the city would surely welcome.
The Cubs signing Kris Bryant would be a major move
Though a Bryant return would be awesome to see, this will surely be easier said than done. Chicago just dropped a ton of money to bring in superstar starting pitcher Marcus Stroman. The new Cub inked a contract worth more than $70 million over three years.
With that move being finalized, it could prevent the Cubbies from going after Bryant. At the same time, several teams have shown interest in trying to land Bryant as well. Most notable, the Seattle Mariners continue to be mentioned in recent days.
Seattle also made a splash by signing reigning AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray, but Jerry Dipoto isn’t even close to closing shop down in going after prized free agents. On top of that, the Rockies and others want Bryant.
If he gets a more lucrative deal elsewhere, Bryant may not think twice about going somewhere else. Bryant did help the Cubs win the World Series in 2016, but this team is clearly in a rebuild. Bryant may look to head to a team who is ready to win now. His future really is up in the air right now.
