Yankees rumors: Signing Carlos Correa would end all questions about front office

Correa remains the best free agent on the open market, and likely the most expensive as well. The Astros offered him five years and $160 million, and he said no. It wasn’t much of a discussion.

The 28-year-old isn’t just concerned with yearly value, but also the length of said contract. Corey Seager got 10 years, why can’t Correa? The Yankees could solve their shortstop issues for good by signing Correa long-term. If he doesn’t transition well at that spot when he’s older, they can always move him to third base in his 30’s. Yet, Correa remains one of the best defenders at his position for a reason.

But, let’s consider the fact that the Yankees haven’t shelled out much money in free agency this offseason for a reason. A solid backup plan would be to sign Trevor Story, who also remains available. Story is coming off a down year, and while still expensive, wouldn’t cost nearly as much as Correa or even Javy Baez.

If anything, Story could serve as more of a stopgap on a multi-year contract than anything else.
