Spencer Rattler transfer rumors: Latest prediction would pit QB against Lincoln Riley
By John Buhler
With Lincoln Riley going to USC, his former quarterback Spencer Rattler might link up with Pac-12 South rival UCLA by way of the transfer portal.
Spencer Rattler may go from being Lincoln Riley’s starting quarterback at Oklahoma to the signal-caller of one of USC’s biggest rivals.
Rattler took a major hit in perception this season. He was seen as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner and the bona-fide lock to be the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. After getting benched in favor of Caleb Williams at Red River, Rattler was inevitably heading for the transfer portal. While him leaving Oklahoma makes a ton of sense after what happened, his connection to Riley may deepen.
Is Rattler about to go all Troy Aikman on us and leave Norman for the UCLA Bruins?
Spencer Rattler transfer rumors: Former OU QB projected to UCLA
While is only one projection made by 247Sports, the fit to UCLA makes a great deal of sense. Arizona State had long been the favorite to land the Phoenix native, but with Jayden Daniels return ing to Tempe for his senior year, that is no longer happening. Should Dorian Thompson-Robinson decide to turn pro after his fourth season at UCLA, Rattler could slot right in for the Bruins.
Keep in mind that Thompson-Robinson could return to school for a fifth season because of the COVID year. If he does, then Rattler is not going to UCLA. However, the Bruins seem to have turned a corner under head coach Chip Kelly. While he is not the best recruiter, he has shown a proclivity to hit repeatedly in the college football version of free agency, the transfer portal. It could happen.
If Rattler is half as good as Aikman was for the Bruins, then this would be fantastic news for UCLA.
