The Georgia football team is three wins away from navigating a season to perfection.

15-0 is on the minds of many Georgia football fans, as conference championship week approaches.

No matter what happens vs. the Alabama Crimson Tide in Atlanta, Georgia went 12-0 in the regular season and 8-0 in SEC play. The shutout of Georgia Tech in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate guarantees the Dawgs a spot in the 2022 College Football Playoff. While they could drop Saturday’s game to Alabama and still win it all, when was the last time they went undefeated?

Georgia football: When was the last time the Dawgs went undefeated?

Of course, the last time Georgia went undefeated came in 1980. This was Herschel Walker’s first year in Athens. The Dawgs went 12-0 that season and 6-0 in SEC play. They had three close scares that season: The season opener at Tennessee where Walker ran over a guy, a narrow win over Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and South Carolina, and of course, The Cocktail Party.

Not only was there no College Football Playoff back then, but there was not even an SEC Championship. Georgia met Notre Dame for the first time in school history in the Sugar Bowl, winning the neutral-site affair, 17-10. Walker battled through injury to carry the Dawgs to their second-ever national title. If Georgia wins their next three games, 1980 will just be 1980 again.

A win over Alabama in Atlanta almost certainly eliminates the Crimson Tide from the playoff.
