There were a lot of fans out there rooting for Georgia to beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in order to open things up for other teams to get into the playoff.

They didn’t get their wish as Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide once more proved you should never bet against them. The moment you do, they step up on the biggest stage.

Alabama humbled Georgia’s vaunted defense and ran away with a 41-24 victory.

What does the result mean for the playoff?

Alabama started the season as the No. 1 team in the nation and they will head into bowl season with that crown back on their head.

Georgia won’t fall far after suffering their first loss of the season to a highly-ranked opponent.

Michigan can ensure themselves a place in the playoff with a victory in the Big Ten Championship Game against Iowa.

After Cincinnati beat Houston for the American Athletic Conference title, they look set to get into the playoff as the only undefeated team remaining.

That means Notre Dame and other fringe playoff hopefuls need to root hard for the Hawkeyes to shake up the rankings before the College Football Playoff committee gets down to the business of setting their final selections.
