Alabama depth chart: Which WR’s must step up to replace John Metchie in College Football Playoff?
By John Buhler
The Alabama football team must adjust without star wide receiver John Metchie III available for the 2022 College Football Playoff.
While Alabama football fans celebrate earning the No. 1 seed in the 2022 College Football Playoff, the Crimson Tide appear to have lost star wide receiver John Metchie III for the season.
Metchie hurt his knee in the 2021 SEC Championship game victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. He was ruled out shortly after exiting the game with an ACL injury. Though Alabama had no issues carving up the defense with Jameson Williams going deep in Bryce Young’s Heisman Trophy-clinching performance, Alabama has two tough games left before winning another national title.
Iron may sharpen iron in Tuscaloosa, but next man up could be a challenge for this receiving corps.
Alabama Football WR Depth Chart
Ourlads has the following listed out as the Alabama receiving depth chart.
- WR-X: John Metchie III, Agiye Hall, Javon Booker
- WR-Z: Jameson Williams, Traeshon Holden, Ja’Corey Brooks
- WR-H: Slade Bolden, Thaiu Jones-Bell
It is abundantly clear that Williams will be expected to do the heavy lifting in the receiving game for the Crimson Tide going forward. However, he needs Slade Bolden to be a high-end No. 2 if Alabama wants to avoid embarrassment in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic vs. Group of Five Champion No. 4 Cincinnati. As for who steps up to replace Metchie, what about Traeshon Holden?
Agiye Hall may be right behind Metchie on the X-receiver depth chart, but he has only one catch in one game. Holden has played in 10 games, catching 15 balls for 211 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Cameron Latu will need to take on a bigger role in the receiving game as well. Maybe Ja’Corey Brooks’ game-tying catch in the Iron Bowl was a sign of more good things to come from him?
With Metchie ruled out, Williams and Bolden must take charge of this Alabama receiving corps.
