Okahoma Sooners fans waited on the tarmac for the arrival of their new head coach, Brent Venables, on Sunday.

The Oklahoma Sooners fanbase watched Lincoln Riley depart the program to become the new head coach at USC last Sunday. After a week of watching the coaching carousel turn, they received the news that they have a new sideline boss in Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Sooners fans were so excited to see their new head coach, that they waited on the tarmac to watch him depart from the jet. Venables was just as excited as the Sooners faithful to be the 23rd head coach in the program’s history.

Oklahoma fans greet new head coach Brent Venables on the tarmac

For those who were unable to greet Venables at the airport, they were able to watch him arrive on Oklahoma football’s Instagram live feed. At one point, there were as many as 12,000 people viewing it!

Venables, obviously, made a name for himself working as a defensive coordinator under head coach Dabo Swinney. In his ten seasons with the Tigers, Venables won two National Championships (2016, 2018) and the Broyles Award for top assistant coach (2016). But, he does have Oklahoma roots.

Back in 1999, Venables joined the Sooners program as a co-defensive coordinator under then-head coach Bob Stoops. He won his first National Championship in 2000. In 2004, Venables was promoted to full-time defensive coordinator and associate head coach, roles he held until 2011.

Venables is officially in Norman, where he will be officially introduced as the program’s new head coach in a press conference on Monday at 10:30 a.m. CT from the Everest Training Center, according to Oklahoma Sports’ official website.
