Look: Aidan Hutchinson took middle seat in coach to Heisman Trophy ceremony
Michigan defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson is a man of the people, flying coach and sitting in a middle seat on his way to the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
As a defensive lineman, Aidan Hutchinson was already bound to be a more blue-collar figure than most Heisman Trophy ceremonies include.
He doubled-down on that persona with his travel situation to New York for Saturday’s festivities.
Hutchinson flew coach and even ended up in a middle seat.
That’s a 6-foot-6, 265-pound human occupying that middle seat. Michigan couldn’t have gotten him an upgrade to first class for this one?
Aidan Hutchinson is vying for a rare defensive Heisman victory
Hutchinson made the trip, uncomfortable as it must have been, thanks to his outstanding performance in the trenches for Michigan this year.
The defensive end had 58 tackles, including 14 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles as a senior.
Michigan is in the College Football Playoff in part because of Hutchinson’s influence up front. He dominated in some of the biggest games for the Wolverines, including three-sack outings against Penn State and Ohio State.
Now Hutchinson hopes to become the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy since fellow Michigan man Charles Woodson took home the trophy in 1997.
Hutchinson is going up against a trio of quarterbacks, including Alabama’s Bryce Young, Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud.
Whether or not he wins the biggest individual award in college football, Hutchinson will also have a shot at winning the ultimate team pride. His Wolverines will take on Georgia in the College Football Playoff on New Year’s Eve.
