Dan Lanning’s replacement at Georgia already in place
Georgia football is losing defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to Oregon but Kirby Smart already has his replacement lined up in Athens.
Right now, Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart would probably like to be 100 percent focused on his College Football Playoff matchup with Michigan.
The hiring of defensive coordinator Dan Lanning as Oregon’s new head coach is a small distraction that can’t be avoided.
Lanning is going to stay on as one of Georgia’s defensive coordinators for the Orange Bowl, so the Bulldogs don’t have to have his replacement plugged in just yet. Still, Smart is wasting no time at all moving on. He has already named new defensive coordinators for the 2022 season.
Dan Lanning replacement: Glenn Schumann, Will Muschamp named co-DCs
According to Seth Emerson of The Athletic, after Lanning leaves for Oregon, Glenn Schumann and Will Muschamp will serve as co-defensive coordinators.
Schumann was already co-defensive coordinator with Lanning. He served as graduate assistant and director of football operations under Nick Saban at Alabama. He followed Smart to Georgia and rose from linebackers coach to co-DC in 2019. He and Lanning both helped shape the dominant Georgia defenses of the last few years.
Meanwhile, Muschamp served as a defensive analyst for the Bulldogs this season. The former South Carolina and Florida head coach has a wealth of experience as a defensive coordinator for LSU, Auburn and Texas in addition to his time running programs himself. He is an obvious choice to bring in as a full-time, on-field assistant.
