Oklahoma football: Brent Venables full contract details revealed
New Oklahoma football head coach Brent Venables picked up a six-year contract from the Sooners with a big raise from his days at Clemson.
As one of the top defensive coordinators in college football, it was a surprise Brent Venables waited this long to finally make the move up to head coach.
Obviously, it took the right place to entice him away from Clemson. It also helps that he’s going to make quite a bit more money as Oklahoma’s head coach than as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.
Details of Venables contract with Oklahoma emerged thanks to Jason Kersey of The Athletic.
Brent Venables contract details: Oklahoma HC to make $6.4 million per year
Venables will make $6.4 million for his first year as head coach. Assuming he makes it to the final year of this contract, he will earn up to $6.9 million per year.
That means the Sooners are getting a bit of discount at head coach entering the new era post-Lincoln Riley. The former coach who left for USC was reportedly making More than $7 million per year and was one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.
The fact that Venables has no prior head coaching experience means his going rate was always going to be lower than an established head coach coming in to take over the program.
Still, even if Venables salary doesn’t match Riley’s, he’s still going to make the same kind of money Ryan Day reportedly makes at Ohio State. So that’s not too shabby.
He was making $2.5 million per year at Clemson by comparison.
