Joe Judge’s job reportedly, inexplicably safe with Giants

The New York Giants are reportedly expected to retain Joe Judge as head coach after this season.
The New York Giants have clinched their fifth consecutive losing season and are now 4-9 on the year after a 37-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that was much more lopsided than the score indicates. For fans expecting there to be widespread changes across the organization, this latest report should have you tempering your expectations.
According to SNY NFL insider Ralph Vacchiano, multiple team and league sources have told him that they believe Joe Judge’s job is safe past this season.
Giants: Joe Judge’s job reportedly safe after this season
This is not necessarily shocking, considering team owner John Mara said upon Judge’s hiring in early 2020 that he would “show a little more patience” with him than in recent years.
The Giants have experienced a ton of turnover at the head coaching position since Tom Coughlin announced his resignation following the 2015 season. Ben McAdoo, who led the team to the playoffs in his first year as head coach in 2016, was fired alongside then-general manager Jerry Reese in the middle of a brutal 2017 season. Pat Shurmur was hired in 2018 after a successful stint as Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator. But after a 9-23 record in two years, Shurmur was let go.
Judge was brought in after eight years on the New England Patriots coaching staff. Even though New York was 6-10 last season, the team was competitive under Judge. 2021 has been a completely different story for the Giants, as they have looked completely outmatched against some of the top-tier teams in the conference, such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams.
The Giants are expected to make changes across the front office this offseason, notably at the general manager position. A report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport last month indicated that Dave Gettleman is unlikely to return in 2022.
Even with a new general manager likely to arrive in 2022, all indications point to Judge remaining as the Giants head coach next season.
