Oklahoma football: Sooners respond to Texas-Quinn Ewers transfer with QB commit of their own
By John Buhler
The Oklahoma football program acted swiftly by gaining Nick Evers’ 4-star commitment upon Quinn Ewers transferring to arch rival Texas.
Brent Venables’ first big recruiting move as the Oklahoma football head coach was getting four-star quarterback Nick Evers‘ commitment upon seeing former Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers transfer to arch rival Texas.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Evers is the No. 156 overall prospect for 2022, the No. 10 quarterback in his class and the No. 26 player from Texas. The Flower Mound, Texas native had been committed to Florida throughout much of the recruiting process, but with Dan Mullen getting fired, this ultimately led to Evers switching Power Five allegiances. Oklahoma just got a good one.
Not only is this a big get for Venables, but this is proof why it was a great idea to pry Jeff Lebby away from Ole Miss to be the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator. Lebby has been Evers’ primary recruiter to Norman since going back to his alma mater’s program last week.
Oklahoma football lands 4-star quarterback commit Nick Evers for 2022
Initially, Oklahoma was not going to sign a quarterback as a part of its 2022 class. This is because the Sooners already landed five-star Caleb Williams out of Washington, D.C. for 2021 and had five-star Malachi Nelson committed to them out of Southern California for 2023. That changed when Nelson flipped his commitment to USC to play for former Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.
The idea here is Evers will serve as Williams’ backup for the next two years before taking the helm once the five-star signal-caller inevitably turns pro. Evers is a talented playmaker from the southwest, but he is not ready to challenge Williams for the Oklahoma quarterbacking throne. However, he could be the guy Oklahoma leans on in Red River when they take on Ewers and Texas.
Recruitment will take time for the new Oklahoma regime, but landing Evers is a huge first step.
