19. 1986 New York Giants

When you have Lawrence Taylor on your team, good things will happen. Whenever Lawrence Taylor wins the NFL MVP, good Lord watch out.

The Giants had a fantastic defense in 1986. They allowed the second fewest points in the league with 236 and the second fewest yards with 4,757. They also had 43 takeaways on the season, which ranked fourth in the NFL. And, oh yeah, Taylor had 20.5 sacks and dominated the league all season long.

New York’s offense was also solid in ‘86. They were eighth in points with 371 and 10th in total yards on the year. They were the sixth best rushing team in football, as well. The Giants totaled over 2,200 yards on the ground.

New York raced through the playoffs. They dominated the 49ers 49-3 and then shutout the Washington Football Team 17-0. They faced the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl and defeated them 39-20. It capped off an amazing defensive year for the Giants, and one of the best individual seasons by a defensive player in NFL history. This was the first of two Super Bowls the Giants would win over the course of five seasons, and is the best season in team history.
