Pittsburgh scored the fifth most points in the NFL in 1978, totaling 356 points on the year. They finished eight in total offense. Terry Bradhsaw had one of the best seasons of his career that season, as well.
The Steelers defense was up to their old antics in 1978. They allowed the fewest points in the NFL, yielding just 195 points all season. The Steel Curtain was also third in terms of the fewest yards allowed in the league, allowing 4,168 yards all year. Pittsburgh’s defense only allowed 10 passing touchdowns throughout the season, the fewest in the league.
The Steelers allowed a total of 15 points in two playoff games prior to their Super Bowl matchup with the Cowboys. They beat the Broncos 33-10 and followed up with a 34-5 win in the AFC Championship Game over the Oilers. They defeated Dallas 35-31 for their third Super Bowl of the decade. Pittsburgh was nearing the end of their dominant run through the 1970s, but they continued to prove they were the best team in the NFL.
