Zach Calzada transfers: 5 potential destinations for Texas A&M QB
By Ethan Lee
North Carolina
Sam Howell’s college career is coming to an end and the North Carolina Tar Heels will need someone to step in and replace him. Would Mack Brown and North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo be interested in what Calzada might bring to the table?
North Carolina previously offered Calzada out of high school and, during this season at Texas A&M, Calzada has shown that he has some potential, even if he is inconsistent. Longo’s Air Raid inspired offense would give Calzada plenty of opportunities to throw the ball around a bit, assuming the Tar Heels would give him a chance.
Liberty
With the Liberty Flames needing an answer at quarterback, would Calzada consider going to play for Hugh Freeze? Playing in Freeze’s offense worked well enough for Malik Willis, who is considered one of the best NFL draft prospects this year.
While Calzada isn’t as productive as Willis when it comes to running the ball and Freeze typically utilizes more mobile quarterbacks, he’s also creative enough to make it work if he thinks Calzada could help the Flames win.
Western Kentucky
While the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers weren’t really in the recruiting picture to try and land Calzada out of high school, Tyson Helton apparently was. Helton, now the head coach at Western Kentucky, was previously at Tennessee. According to 247 Sports, Helton was the primary recruiter for Calzada for the Vols.
Western Kentucky could potentially work out well for Calzada. The Hilltoppers have been experimenting with the Air Raid this season and it’s worked out well for Bailey Zappe, a transfer from Houston Baptist University, who threw for 5,545 yards and 56 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.
Western Kentucky is losing its offensive coordinator, but given the success that scheme brought to the Hilltoppers, expect to see it retained to some degree going forward.
