Oregon football: Dan Lanning contract details revealed
By John Buhler
Dan Lanning got a nice raise in pay after becoming the next head coach of Oregon football.
While he still has to coordinate the Georgia Bulldogs’ defense through the College Football Playoff, incoming Oregon football head coach Dan Lanning is about to make bank with all that Phil Knight Nike money coming his way.
Lanning might only be in his mid-30s, but he just landed one of the best gigs in the Power Five. Though Georgia was expected to lose him to a head-coaching gig this offseason, for him to get the Oregon job after Mario Cristobal departed for Miami, you could not ask for a better first-time head-coaching opportunity than this. So how much will the Ducks be paying Coach Lanning now?
Here are the contract details of Lanning’s deal to become the next face of Oregon football.
Oregon football: What are the details of Dan Lanning’s contract?
It appears to be a six-year deal for Lanning, starting at $4.6 million. His compensation escalates an additional $100k annually. While Lanning could be making upwards of $5.1 million by the final year of his contract, there is a decent chance his contract with the University of Oregon could be restructured to a higher amount if he is successful. The question is how good will be in Eugene.
Lanning is a great defensive mind and an outstanding recruiter. The Ducks are not going to skip a beat there with Cristobal heading to Coral Gables. What is unknown is how good of a first-time head coach Lanning will be. Much of this hinges on how strong of a first staff he builds. With the Pac-12 down as a whole, this should expedite the learning curve Lanning will have at Oregon.
Simply, Oregon expects Lanning to contend for Pac-12 titles and College Football Playoff berths.
