College recruiting: Michigan State football recruiting 2022 class grade

Mel Tucker and the Michigan State football program took a huge step forward this season. Will the Spartans be able to do that again with a new batch of recruits?

This season has been huge for the Michigan State Spartans. Mel Tucker has been able to get the Spartans going in the right direction in a hurry thanks to some key additions to the program.

Now he’s working on adding some more stars in this next recruiting class.

Michigan State football top 2022 recruit: Alex VanSumeren, DL (Essexville, MI)

The Spartans are getting a pretty intimidating and talented addition to their defensive line with Alex VanSumeren. At 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, VanSumeren is a stout and solid defensive line presence who helps fortify a defense that could stand to be improved upon.

Michigan State football recruiting strengths and weaknesses

Michigan State is working on addressing its presence in the trenches. With four offensive linemen and four defensive linemen currently committed to play for the Spartans, Tucker is putting an emphasis on improving at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Michigan State currently only has one quarterback committed, but he’s a pretty talented quarterback, so that may not be a bad thing.

Diamond in the rough for Michigan State football: Dillon Tatum, ATH (West Bloomfield, MI)

Michigan State is getting a pretty versatile athlete in Dillon Tatum. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound recruit has played several positions and could end up helping the Spartans in multiple capacities in the future.

Where does Michigan State football rank nationally and in the Big Ten in recruiting?

The Spartans are definitely moving in the right direction. Right now, Michigan State has the 18th-best recruiting class in the country and the fourth-best in the Big Ten, according to the folks over at 247 Sports.

Michigan State football 2022 recruiting grade: B+

This is a very solid recruiting class that is being highlighted well with some key transfer players. The Spartans are getting some very nice additions across the board and Tucker should be happy with how his program is being built.
