Quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler were in a tough spot with Oklahoma football, so the nature of their relationship is hardly surprising.

From the moment that Spencer Rattler started to struggle early this season with the Sooners, it was only a matter of time before Oklahoma football fans started to call for prized freshman Caleb Williams. And eventually, the change was made.

It was clear after that happened that Rattler, from various rumors and just looking at his demeanor during games or on the sidelines, was none too pleased with the situation. And it was hard not to wonder what the dynamic was between him and Williams in the Sooners locker room.

We might have a little clarity on that now.

Williams recently appeared on ”The Podcast on the Prairie” podcast when the quarterback, who appears currently on track — at least in the hopes of OU fans — to stick around at Oklahoma with new head coach Brent Venables, gave fans the scoop on his relationship with Rattler.

Oklahoma football: Caleb Williams, Spencer Rattler ‘weren’t best friends’

In the interview, Williams noted that he and Rattler “weren’t best friends” but made sure to note that the two signal-callers “didn’t hate each other.”

All told, this seems to be a bit of the truth and a bit of some stuff that we can read between the lines on. Looking at the entirety of what we saw and know, it does feel safe to assume that Williams and Rattler might not have been at each other’s throats, but they didn’t care for one another. After all, there’s a lot of ground to cover between “best friends” and “hating each other”.

Of course, this is all a non-issue now. Rattler entered the transfer portal and just recently committed to South Carolina and, as of now, Williams remains on track to lead the Sooners into a new era.

Still, as the Lincoln Riley era devolved this past season, it’s interesting to see the dynamics that were at play in the quarterback room.
