Alabama football: Mac Jones’ FBS passing record is no more
Alabama football quarterback Mac Jones had his FBS record for passing efficiency broken by Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall.
In 2020, Mac Jones completed the most efficient passing season by a college quarterback in FBS history.
The record of 203.1 passing efficiency lasted for one year.
On Friday, Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall led the Chanticleers to their first bowl victory ever. In the victory over Northern Illinois, McCall threw for 315 yards and four touchdowns, posting a passer rating of 205.53.
That performance lifted his season-long passer rating to 207.65, surpassing Jones.
Grayson McCall broke Mac Jones’ record as the most efficient CFB passer ever
McCall’s season in terms of efficiency was nearly impeccable. Is passing efficiency was above 200 in eight of the 11 games he played this season. He missed two games against Georgia Southern and Georgia State.
During his outstanding 2020 campaign, Jones had seven games with a passer rating above 200, including two playoff games against Notre Dame and Ohio State. He threw nine touchdowns and no interceptions while completing more than 80 percent of his passes in those two outings.
That Jones did that while playing in the SEC and facing off with playoff teams makes his achievement stand on its own. Still, records were made to be broken and McCall hit the mark against the opposition in front of him.
Maybe Bryce Young will make a run at the record in 2022.
