New York Mets hire Buck Showalter as their next manager

Buck Showalter has been named as the next manager of the New York Mets.

New York Mets owner Steven Cohen announced over on Twitter Saturday afternoon that Buck Showalter will be the franchise’s next manager.

Showalter is a baseball lifer who has managed four other big-league clubs prior to this. From the 1995 New York Yankees to the 2016 Baltimore Orioles, Showalter has managed five teams to the postseason. He has won his division twice, including the expansion-era Arizona Diamondbacks winning 100 games in 1999. Showalter last managed the Orioles during the 2018 MLB season.

New York has made a great hire in getting a proven manager who can provide stability for a team expected to contend in the National League next season.

Though Showalter has not managed in three seasons and will be turning 66-years-old in May, Mets fans have to like this hiring, at least in the short-term. New York will be one of the biggest challengers to the  Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The Mets have a ton of top-flight talent on the pitching staff. With even the slightest improvement on offense, this team could be dangerous.

Ultimately, the Mets are hiring a skipper who has won just over half of his games (50.6 percent). While his teams tend to have a high variance component about them, Showalter is a three-time AL Manager of the Year for a reason. He can go into any clubhouse and get his team to play competitively very quickly. This is a hire Mets fans should have no problem getting behind one bit.

Though the Mets may not catch the Braves, they have now hired a skipper who will have them pushing for the postseason in his first season on the job.
