Another nail has been hammered into the coaching coffin of Matt Nagy, who is expected to be fired by the Chicago Bears at the end of the season.

One of the darkest days of the NFL season is nearing. Black Monday is the annual exodus of the year’s worst coaches, but we typically don’t have to wait until the day of to find out who’s head will roll.

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy has been perhaps the most popular name on the coaching hot seat this side of Urban Meyer. To be fair to Nagy, he is nowhere near the awful depths that Meyer sunk to — he occupies that circle of coaching hell all by himself. But that doesn’t mean Nagy is any less screwed as far as getting fired at the end of the season.

Famously, the Bears have never fired a head coach during the season and that trend won’t get bucked for Nagy. That being said, despite the false start rumors that have popped up all season regarding Nagy’s job status, the most damning nail has already been hammered into his coaching coffin.

According to NFL on CBS insider Jason La Canfora, Bears coaches have already begun to look for other jobs, operating under the assumption that they — like Nagy — will be out of work when the season is over.

Per CBS:

"Many of the assistants on Bears coach Matt Nagy’s staff have already been looking for potential jobs on the college markets, and most of them are operating as if they will be seeking employment elsewhere next season, league and team sources said."

This should come as absolutely no shock to anyone who has paid even a little attention to the Bears this season. Despite Justin Fields showing flashes, it’s become clear that Nagy isn’t the guy who will be able to develop him, whether that’s because of a lack of skill or a lack of time is up for debate.

Nagy’s assistants looking for gigs elsewhere doesn’t guarantee that wholesale change will happen, nor does it mean that a coaching change at the top is guaranteed to come. There’s still a chance Nagy gets another season to see what he can do with Fields, and if he stays that means many of his assistants will likely be made sacrificial lambs.

Either way, with just a handful of games left in the 2021 season, things sound pretty awkward at Halas Hall.
