Chicago Bears: Jim McMahon

Oh, this is a shame because Jim McMahon was ahead of his time. Not so much for his play on the field, but how he behaved off of it. He was a bad boy. He wore a headband with Commissioner Rozelle’s name on it, he talked a lot of trash as a quarterback- McMahon was fun.

He wasn’t a bad quarterback. If he was, the Bears wouldn’t have kept him around for seven years. McMahon was a very good system quarterback in Chicago. He had the benefit of playing with the greatest defense in the NFL throughout the decade, and he had one of the best running backs of all time behind him.

McMahon did have a Pro Bowl season in 1985, which, prior to Mitch Trubisky being a Pro Bowler in 2018, was the last time the Bears had a Pro Bowl quarterback. Aside from the 1985 season, though, McMahon was 0-3 in the playoffs.

McMahon in a lot of ways was like Baker Mayfield- talked a lot, wasn’t great, wasn’t terrible. He was a character who could make the occasional play. He helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX and was one of the most recognizable players of the 1980s, but he was overrated from a production standpoint.
