Drew Brees turned down Saints in funniest way possible
By Mark Powell
The New Orleans Saints are down to rookie Ian Book at quarterback, so they called Drew Brees. He wasn’t feeling it.
While Brees initially had some interest, per the report, he opted not to leave his cushy job with NBC and return to the league. The Saints are likely the only team Brees would even consider playing for at this juncture, but given they’re 7-7 and face injuries at key positions, it’s a smart move by the future Hall of Famer.
Brees has also previously expressed how tough it is for him to get in football shape.
“I better get my butt going if that’s the case,” Brees said. “There is a saying that if you don’t use it, you lose it. That’s the truth, my arm is killing me because I haven’t been training to throw. I actually feel worse now than at any other point in my career. I may have one throw, one series, one drive.”

Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending injury a few months back, and now Taysom Hill is hurt. That leaves 2020 fourth-round pick Ian Book as the Saints next-best option. Were they forced into an emergency option, New Orleans was hoping one of Brees, Philip Rivers or Josh McCown would consider coming out of retirement, at least briefly.
Brees eventually wanted none of it, and reported back to the Saints in hilarious fashion.
The Saints will move forward with Book as the starter this week against the Dolphins. Even without Brees and the like, Sean Payton is an offensive genius. Book, like the quarterbacks that have played in Brees’ place, will look capable.
Whether it’ll be enough to beat Tua and the Dolphins remains to be seen.
