Saints: 3 quarterback replacements no one is talking about for 2022
The New Orleans Saints still need to figure out their quarterback situation in the post-Drew Brees era. Here are three outside-the-box options to consider.
The Saints have been a mess at quarterback in 2021, even more than they ever could have expected after Drew Brees’ retirement.
The run of bad luck ended Jameis Winston’s show-me season early. It saw Taysom Hill deal with a variety of injuries and Trevor Siemian land on the COVID list. If someone had “Ian Book starting a game with big playoff implications” on their bingo card, then they’re the big winner.
Whatever else happens this season, New Orleans needs to sort things out for 2022 and hope for much better results. If the end game isn’t to bring Winston back for another go, here are some other options…

Baker Mayfield
The relationship between Baker Mayfield and the Browns doesn’t feel too great coming out of the 2021 season. Cleveland keeps making moves to try to build a playoff contender but they’ve continually fallen flat.
With a 6-7 record as a starter this season, the Browns could be tempted to trade Mayfield before his contract runs out after the 2022 season.
Mayfield has had his deficiencies with Cleveland. However, he’s shown real ability and took the Browns to an 11-5 record in his third year in the league.
Sean Payton could certainly get more out of Mayfield than Kevin Stefanski or the coaches that have guided the quarterback in his young career.
It’s not quite like plucking Drew Brees out of San Diego, but it could have similar results if the Saints saw the right stuff in Mayfield. He could be the guy given the right offense.
