Oklahoma football: Sooners fans give Bob Stoops a hero’s welcome
Oklahoma football fans were pumped to have Bob Stoops coaching the Alamo Bowl, giving him a hero’s welcome when he took the field.
Bob Stoops looks perfectly happy with his broadcasting gig but he came when his name got called by his program in their time of need.
The national-title-winning head coach stepped in to coach the Alamo Bowl after Lincoln Riley left Norman to take over as head coach at USC.
Considering the response to Riley’s departure, it should come as no surprise that Stoops was greeted with an equally passionate fanfare.
Oklahoma football fans went wild for Bob Stoops at the Alamo Bowl
Here’s what the crowd at the Alamo Bowl sounded like when Stoops first took the field:
Stoops won a national title with the Sooners in 2000 and won 10 Big 12 titles during his tenure. He was a national coach of the year twice and received Big 12 Coach of the Year honors six times. He retired from coaching in 2017. Riley, his offensive coordinator, was the pick to replace him.
Stoops came out of retirement in 2019 to coach the Dallas Renegades of the XFL but that league folded before long.
While there had been rumors linking Stoops to several head coaching jobs, including the USC one, he hasn’t bitten on a full-time return.
Fans will get to see him in a one-off capacity for Oklahoma against Oregon. If he does decide to get back into coaching, it won’t be with the Sooners for a few years at least. Oklahoma hired former Stoops defensive coordinator Brent Venables to take over the program going forward.
