Michigan football has a proud tradition but the great John Madden’s grandson has helped add to that as Jesse Madden is a Wolverine.

There are few names bigger in the world of football than the great John Madden. It could be as a Super Bowl-winning head coach with the Raiders, a Hall of Fame broadcaster with every major network over decades of work, or from his iconic video game series that bares his name and likeness.

But did you know that he also has ties to the Michigan football program, despite never actually playing for the team that is currently coached by Jim Harbaugh?

John’s grandson, Jesse, is a freshman quarterback for the Wolverines. He’s obviously a bit down on the depth chart but he did make an appearance early in the 2021 season, the first of his college football career, as he got into a blowout win over Northern Illinois on the year that saw the team make it to the College Football Playoff.

Where did John Madden play college football?

Though John Madden was a titan in the football world, his roots in college football were humble and didn’t involve Ann Arbor. Instead, the legendary broadcaster spent time at Oregon (he never played), College of San Mateo, Grays Harbor College, and Cal Poly.
