All Iowa football fans want after the Vrbo Citrus Bowl loss to Kentucky is for head coach Kirk Ferentz to fire his son offensive coordinator Brian for being terrible at his job.

Poor Iowa football fans saw their once-promising season go to hell in a handbasket thanks in large part to the horrendous play-calling of Brian Ferentz, the offensive coordinator son of longtime head coach Kirk Ferentz.

While Kentucky is an excellent program, this loss to the Wildcats is an indictment on the current football operation in Iowa City. A month to prepare for a defense-first Kentucky team and 17 points was all the Iowa offense could muster. This team at one point in the year was No. 2 in the country. Now, the Hawkeyes have four losses on the year and have to answer the big question.

Has it really run its course for the Ferentzes in Iowa City? 10 wins at Iowa is a huge accomplishment, but nepotism and putrid offenses aren’t going to cut it in the 2020s. Even more so, noted Hayden Fry disciple and Iowa alum Mark Stoops is doing more with less at his traditional basketball school than Ferentz nearly 25 years into his post. Things have to change in Iowa City.

And this is coming from a total outsider. Just imagine how Hawkeye Nation is feeling about this.

Iowa football fans want Kirk Ferentz to fire Brian Ferentz for being terrible

Had Iowa had anything close to a 21st-century offense, the Hawkeyes might have won the Big Ten and maybe made the College Football Playoff. They would not have lost more than one game heading into the Big Ten Championship.

It is abundantly clear that Brian Ferentz isn’t it at offensive coordinator and Spencer Petras did more bad than good under center this season. While some like what Alex Padilla brings to the table, Iowa needs a total facelift offensively, which would require going in a totally different direction.

At this time, the University of Iowa has to decide what it wants its football team to be. Dressed like imitation Pittsburgh Steelers, do they want to be the Steelers from the glory days or the shell of themselves they currently are under Mike Tomlin. Ferentz has been great for Iowa, but sometimes you just gotta rip the band-aid off. Does Iowa want to go from good to great?

Iowa may never recruit like a college football blue-blood, but the Hawkeyes have a big enough brand and loyal following to win the Big Ten every now and then and push for the College Football Playoff. Sadly, this was that year, but familial ties got in the way.

Iowa fans have every right to be mad at how offensive ineptitude ruined a once-promising season.
