Oklahoma football flips Dillon Gabriel in wake of Caleb Williams transfer
Oklahoma football found a Caleb Williams replacement in mere hours, flipping former UCF quarterback from his transfer to UCLA.
Particularly this late in the offseason, Oklahoma football fans were sent immediately into somewhat of a panic mode when Caleb Williams officially entered the transfer portal. Namely, they wondered what the move would be to replace him at quarterback.
Just hours later, new head coach Brent Venables and his staff locked up a huge move in that regard, flipping a high-profile transfer from his previous commitment.
According to reports, former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who had previously committed to Chip Kelly and UCLA after electing to transfer from the Knights, is heading to Norman.
Oklahoma football: Dillon Gabriel is as good of a Caleb Williams replacement as Sooners could hope for
Gabriel was extremely prolific throughout his time at UCF and was playing well in 2021 before suffering an injury that prematurely ended his season.
Over 26 games at UCF, Gabriel threw for an unreal 8,041 yards with 70 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions. He’s not the dual-threat player that Williams was, to be sure, but he did rush for over 370 yards and eight touchdowns (also catching a score on a trick play as well) over that span with the Knights.
With former Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby joining the Oklahoma football staff in the same role alongside Venables, the prospects for the prolific passer are endless as he could put up true video game numbers for the Sooners.
