Oklahoma football head coach Brent Venables and AD Joe Castiglione released a statement addressing Caleb Williams’ entry into the transfer portal.

On Monday, Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams threw Norman back into chaos when he announced he’s entering the transfer portal to explore his options for the future.

The Sooners have already had to deal with upheaval thanks to head coach Lincoln Riley leaving for USC. Losing their five-star quarterback would be another blow.

In anticipation of Sooners fans losing their cool over Williams, Oklahoma football officials dropped a statement.

Oklahoma football statement on Caleb Williams news

“Caleb Williams enjoyed an exciting and impactful first season at the University of Oklahoma and we will continue to be engaged with him and his family on a comprehensive plan for his development as a student and quarterback, including a path to graduation and strategic leveraging of NIL opportunity,” the statement from head coach Brent Venables and athletic director Joe Castiglione. “While we believe OU provides Caleb the best opportunity to develop as a player and realize his goals for college and beyond, we respect his right to explore his options following key staffing changes here.”

The statement also highlighted OU’s commitment to the student-athlete and the arrival of new offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.

Williams made it clear that he is still considering a return to Oklahoma. He is not free to speak to other schools until he’s in the portal.

Whether or not he’ll make the leap to another school will be determined in the future.
