What is Kirby Smart’s record vs. Alabama?
By John Buhler
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart is 0-4 vs. Nick Saban, but will the College Football Playoff National Championship Game result in his first win over his old boss?
Once again, the mentor takes on the protege, as Kirby Smart’s Georgia football program will face Nick Saban’s juggernaut Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship.
The Georgia Bulldogs lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game back in early December in Atlanta. That was the Dawgs’ only loss of the season, as they were 12-0 heading into the conference title bout. After having to eat that loss for the better part of a month, No. 3 Georgia had no problems dismantling the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines in their national semifinal game.
With Alabama and Georgia meeting yet again, what is Smart’s career record vs. the Crimson Tide?
Georgia football: What is Kirby Smart’s record vs. Alabama?
Smart has been the head coach of his alma mater since taking over for Mark Richt in 2016. To date, the Dawgs have faced four times with Smart at the helm. Unfortunately, Georgia has not beaten Alabama since Saban’s first year on the job way back in 2007. That means Georgia is currently riding a series-worst seven-game losing streak. Thus, Smart is 0-4 vs. Alabama.
To be fair, Saban has an incredible track record vs. his many proteges. In fact, only one time has a Saban disciple beaten him. Fate would have it that it came earlier this season, as Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M Aggies handed the Crimson Tide their only loss of the year during SEC play. Smart has the more talented team this year, but he and his team will have to get over their mental hurdle.
If Smart improves to 1-4 over the Crimson Tide, Dawg Nation will erect a statue of him in Athens.
