NFL rumors: 5 teams that should trade for Christian McCaffrey
By John Buhler
Few teams are worse at running the football or have more cap space than Miami
The Miami Dolphins have been knocking on the AFC playoff door for the last two years after bottoming out in 2019. Not only do they have more picks than they know what to do with, but are absolutely swimming in cap space. Most importantly, this is one of the worst rushing attacks in all of football. Only the rebuilding Houston Texans are worse than Miami. They could use McCaffrey.
Whether he wants to admit it or not, 2022 is a critical year for head coach Brian Flores. Finishing the season on a high note will help him keep his job, but this team has to get into the top-seven in the AFC for him to assuredly get a fourth year on the job. While they can afford to trade for McCaffrey, it is a little dicey to pair an injured running back with an injury-prone Tua Tagovailoa.
Why not go play for the head coach and the general manager who drafted you?
The best fit for McCaffrey has to be the Washington Football Team. They are led by the same head coach who drafted him out of Stanford in Ron Rivera. While Marty Hurney is not the general manager in the nation’s capital, he is the executive vice president of football and player personnel. He was the one who took McCaffrey in the first round five years ago. Washington is the team.
Though Washington is better than average running the football, there is not a lot to get excited about offensively on this defense-first football team. Since McCaffrey is a dual-threat playmaker in the backfield, he would, in theory, create space for his new Washington teammates to get open. Washington also has the third most available cap space heading into next season. Make it happen.
Miami has the need and the finances, but Washington has the cap space and the ideal fit here.
