Broncos interviewing Jerod Mayo for head coaching vacancy
By John Buhler
One of the candidates the Denver Broncos are planning to interview for their head-coaching vacancy is New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo.
The Denver Broncos have begun their head-coaching search to replace Vic Fangio with New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo being one of the candidates for the gig.
Mayo has spent the last three seasons on Bill Belichick’s staff. Prior to that, he played for Belichick from 2008-15, earning two trips to the Pro Bowl and being part of the Super Bowl-winning team in 2014. Mayo is 35-years-old and projects as a future NFL head coach, but that may be a year or so away. This supposed interview might be all about gathering intel on New England.
The last time the Broncos hired a Belichick disciple, it was the Josh McDaniels train wreck.
Broncos to interview Patriots LB coach Jerod Mayo for head-coaching vacancy
Look. This is not an indictment on Mayo as a future head-coaching candidate, but the 2022 Broncos are not the right time and fit for him to make the leap. Denver is arguably the best of the six head-coaching vacancies and the Broncos could get the best candidate of the cycle. While Mayo could be the next superstar defensive mind, we all saw how the Vic Fangio era worked out.
Ultimately, Denver must hire an offensive mind to fix the quintessential problem that has plagued the organization for the better part of a decade: Quarterback play. Denver’s last two head-coaching hires were on the defensive side of the ball and ended terribly. Mayo may be the next up-and-comer, but he is way too green as an NFL coach to take over a struggling Broncos franchise.
On the positive side of things, Mayo even being a candidate for the Denver gig is a huge testament to what Broncos general manager George Paton thinks of him as a coach, as well as what Mayo has done in his second football career with New England.
