When did Georgia football last win the national championship?

Georgia football fans are hoping their long national championship drought is coming to an end.
Though the Georgia football program is one of the very best in the country, it has been well over a generation since the Dawgs last won a national title.
On Monday night, Kirby Smart and the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs will face the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide for all the marbles. This is the second meeting between these two SEC powers this season, as well as the second time these two rivals will meet for a national title in the College Football Playoff era. Georgia had its heart broken by Alabama on 2nd-and-26 in January 2018.
So how long has it been since Georgia last won a national championship in college football?

Not since Herschel Walker was a freshman have the Dawgs won a national championship. This was the last time Georgia navigated a season to perfection.

Though they had close calls vs. Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida, Georgia was able to secure its second and most recent claimed national title by defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the 1981 Sugar Bowl.
While it has been over 40 years since Georgia last one a national title, the Dawgs have assembled enough talent under Smart’s guidance to where they are going to do the unthinkable and win it all at some point. The only thing standing in the way of winning the third national title in school history is Georgia avenging its lone loss of the season by getting over the Crimson Tide hurdle.
As soon as Georgia wins its next national championship, 1980 will be just another year in history.
