Who do the Chiefs play next? All you need to know about divisional round
For the second straight week, the Kansas City Chiefs will face a team that they clashed with during the regular season as they host the Buffalo Bills.
That 3-4 start by the reigning AFC champions this season is certainly a distant memory.
Including Sunday night’s 42-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Kansas City Chiefs have now won 10 of their last 11 games. They spotted Mike Tomlin’s club a 7-0 lead thanks to the Pittsburgh defense.
Then quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s offense warmed up quickly. Before you could say Ben Roethlisberger, the Chiefs owned a 21-7 lead at intermission and had rolled up 300 yards of total offense.
Who do the Chiefs play next week?
So the conference’s second seed now takes on the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills on Sunday night at 6:30 pm ET.
It’s the last of the four games this weekend in terms of the NFL Divisional Playoffs. And it will be the fourth meeting between these franchises in two seasons. A year ago, Reid’s team went to Orchard Park and not only defeated the Bills during the regular season on a Monday night (26-17) and then ousted them in the AFC Championship Game, 38-24, at Arrowhead Stadium.
Earlier this year, the Chiefs welcomed Sean McDermott’s club to Kansas City on a Sunday night in Week 5 and pushed around the AFC West champions, 38-20. Now the clubs are at it again with a berth in the conference title game on the line.
It’s been quite a turnaround for a franchise that for quite some time could not win in the postseason, even with Reid as the head coach. There was a stretch in which the Chiefs were a miserable 1-11 in the playoffs from 1993-2017. That included eight straight postseason losses from 1993-2013, tied for the second-longest such losing streak in NFL annals.
Of course, it’s been a different story with Mahomes at the controls. The Chiefs are 7-2 in their last nine postseason outings with him behind center. Reid’s team has scored at least 31 points in six of those contests. Should be quite the Sunday evening at Kansas City.
