Cowboys: Stephen Jones, Jerry Jones give vote of confidence to Mike McCarthy
Dallas Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones expects head coach Mike McCarthy to continue coaching in Dallas for the 2022-23 NFL season, as does Jerry Jones.
The Dallas Cowboys are facing what SI’s Conor Orr refers to as “Jerry’s Dilemma“: with their defensive and offensive coordinators fielding head coaching interviews from other teams, where does that leave the team in regards to Mike McCarthy?
According to Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, the Cowboys already have an answer to the impending dilemma. It looks like they’re going to keep McCarthy instead of promoting either Quinn or Moore to the head coaching position.
Jerry Jones said something similar on Sunday.
“I’m not going to discuss coaching, preparation, any of those things. That is not on the table,” Jones said.
Cowboys speak on the future of Mike McCarthy in Dallas
The Cowboys were in a similar situation in 2010, when Jason Garrett took over as head coach for the Cowboys instead of renowned defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Garrett stayed with the Cowboys until he was eventually fired, while Phillips went on to coach the 2015 Denver Broncos defense and the 2018 Los Angeles Rams defense. While Phillips has been to two Super Bowls, the Cowboys now have the longest streak of playoff appearances without a conference championship game.
While the Cowboys are already stating their interest in keeping McCarthy, other teams are already moving in quickly on their coveted coordinators. The Broncos have already scheduled interviews with both Quinn and Moore.
While it might be controversial to fire McCarthy already, the Cowboys are in a difficult spot as they try to convince everyone to stay in Dallas for 2022.
