NBA Trade Deadline: 15 best NBA players who could be available
By Nick Villano
15. Kemba Walker — New York Knicks
The New York Knicks made the deal for Cam Reddish because the deals they made in the offseason did not work at all. They signed Evan Fournier to a massive deal in the offseason, and he’s been maddeningly inconsistent. He’s been much better over the last two weeks, but it was preceded by a rough stretch. The other big move for the Knicks was bringing the hometown star Kemba Walker into the fray on a decent contract.
Walker hasn’t been good for the Knicks, and instead of letting the veteran shoot himself out of his slump, head coach Tom Thibideau benched his veteran. It’s not like he made him come off the bench with the second team. No, Walker is getting basically zero minutes.
He was getting back in the lineup in December, but then he got injured. He should be returning any day now (and he might have returned by the time you read this), so he has a shot to show other teams he has something left in the tank. There’s a chance one of those teams is the Knicks themselves, but the team might think he’s better suited elsewhere.
There’s a lot that has to be worked out here. Who knows how much Walker can still play when he returns. There is talk he might not be able to play in back-to-backs. However, those aren’t an issue in the playoffs, and Walker is someone who can still help a good team off the bench. This is a legit option if the Knicks decide they can use the assets.
