This is where the XXV Olympic Winter Games will take place.
Benvenuto in Italia.
Italy was selected as the host site for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. More specifically, cities Milan and Cortina d’Ampezoo will be the site for all the festivities. The opening ceremony will take place on a field that soccer fans may be familiar with as the Winter Olympics is set to kick off at San Siro Stadium, the home for soccer clubs A.C. Milan and Inter Milan.
The plan is to have the Olympic Games wrap at Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheater built in 30 AD. This will mark the first Olympic Games since 1984 where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held at different venues.
The timetable for Milano Cortina 2026 is for its festivities to begin on February 6 and wrap on the 22nd. The aforementioned host site will be unique as it will be the first time Milan hosted an Olympic Games.
Milan-Carotina d’Amprezzo won the bid in 2019 by 47 votes to 34 votes with Stockholm-Åre (Sweden) as the runner up.
Has Italy hosted the Winter Olympic Games before?
Yes. The last time Italy was the choice location for the Winter Olympics was when Team USA’s Shaun White won his first Olympic gold medal. It was at the 2006 Olympics where White, who holds the world record for most Olympic golds by a snowboarder, won the half-pipe event.
Team USA combined to take home 25 medals: nine gold, nine silver, and seven bronze. Team USA came in second for total medals only trailing Germany when they collectively racked up 29 medals including 11 golds. Austria, tallying 23 total medals, tied Team USA in gold medals with nine.
Winter Games 2026 will also mark 70 years since Italy hosted its first-ever Winter Olympics. Back then Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted1956’s VII Olympic Winter Games.
