College football rankings: 10 teams helped most by the transfer portal
By John Buhler
Check out these latest college football rankings to see what college football programs did the best job of using the transfer portal this offseason.
The transfer portal is becoming to college football what free agency is to professional sports.
While recruiting has long been the rough equivalent of a draft to acquire talent, the transfer portal has quickly become all the rage in college sports. Players have more freedom than they ever have, thanks to NIL and less stringent transfer rules. All the while, the transfer portal has become a means for rebuilding programs to reshape their rosters quicker under a new administration.
Here are the top 10 college football teams helped the most by the transfer portal, according to the 247Sports Composite transfer team rankings.
College football rankings: 10 teams who made the most of the transfer portal
- LSU Tigers
- USC Trojans
- Ole Miss Rebels
- Arkansas Razorbacks
- Florida State Seminoles
- Nebraska Cornhuskers
- Oklahoma Sooners
- Texas Longhorns
- South Carolina Gamecocks
- Florida Gators
LSU, USC and Ole Miss lead the way one-two-three in the latest transfer portal rankings. With Oklahoma transfer quarterback Caleb Williams rumored to be headed to USC, the Trojans would soar past LSU to the top spot.
Arkansas and Florida State round out the top five. The rest of the top 10 are as follows: Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, South Carolina and Florida. While most of these teams make sense where they are, the strangest one has to be Oklahoma at No. 7, given that it lost so much in the portal already.
What this shows is proven head coaches like Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley at new establishments will clean up in the portal because high-profile players will want to play for them. It also illustrates that teams who have missed in recruitment are using the portal as a means to offset losses on the recruiting trail. This is why winning in free agency is not the same as winning in the draft.
Last season saw Michigan State crush it in the portal, so look for one of these teams to potentially be this year’s Spartans.
