Michigan — 24 years

Michigan is among the traditional powers in the Big Ten but they have yet to break through for a championship this century.

Lloyd Carr’s Wolverines won the 1997 national championship as selected by the AP and others, though it was split with Nebraska, who won the Coaches’ Poll title. Before that, Michigan’s last claimed title goes all the way back to 1948.

Jim Harbaugh brought them as close to a championship as any other coach since Carr this past season. The Wolverines won the Big Ten title and made it to the College Football Playoff. However, they ran into eventual champion Georgia.

Harbaugh is a good enough coach and recruiter to get them back to the playoff. The trouble is looming NFL interest in the former 49ers head coach.

If Harbaugh stays, the Wolverines can break that 24-year dry spell. If he leaves, who knows what’s next for the program.
